Holy Name’s Provincial Council gathered for its first meeting of the year, discussing, among other topics, the Province’s strategic plan and leadership development.

Provincial Vicar Celebrates Martin Luther King Day Mass
History and current events, music and tears, visitors and parishioners were all part of the Province’s commemoration of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday when two special Masses were celebrated in New York by Dominic Monti. He talked of Dr. King’s message of nonviolence and of its connection to faith.

Council Members Meet in New Jersey
Holy Name’s Provincial Council gathered Jan. 7 to 9 in South Jersey for their first meeting of the year, discussing topics including the Province’s strategic plan, leadership development, the Franciscan Volunteer Ministry, fraternal gatherings as well as standard monthly topics of finance personnel. Four new friar assignments have been announced.

SBU Students Enjoy Behind-the-Scenes Perspective of Inauguration
Students from St. Bonaventure University were among the many who went to Washington, D.C., this week to experience the excitement and to learn.

Postulants Celebrate New Year at Women’s Shelter
Two of Holy Name’s postulants began the new year working with two pre-novices from the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary at a Boston-area shelter for young pregnant women and single-parent mothers.

Boston Shrine Completes $1.4 Million Campaign
In a bad economy when non-profit organizations are feeling the pinch of decreased giving and sinking investments, St. Anthony Shrine is bucking the trend. The shrine recently celebrated the successful completion of its $1.4 million 2008 Franciscan Annual Campaign.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
Churches throughout the Province are joining their ecumenical partners this week in the national Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.

Franciscan Sojourners Plan Winter Retreat
The Mt. Irenaeus community of Western New York has invited friends for a weekend of companionship and prayer Feb. 6 to 8 as the Franciscan Sojourners gather for their annual winter retreat.

NYC Church Ministers to Those With Aging Parents
In conjunction with its counseling center, St. Francis of Assisi Church in New York will offer a workshop in March on the stresses and struggles of coping with aging parents. “My Parents Are Older Now: A Workshop for Adult Children of Aging Parents” begins on March 4.

Mychal’s Message Founder Attends White House Farewell
College student Shannon Hickey and her mother, Kelly Lynch, founders of Mychal’s Message, the charitable organization named for Mychal Judge, were guests of the White House at the Jan. 15 farewell reception for President Bush. For seven years, they have been spreading their message about service.

Province Mourns Deaths of Friar Relatives
Holy Name Province is mourning the deaths of family members, as well as the passing of several friars from other OFM provinces.

Strategic Plan Comes to Life
The Province’s coordinator for strategic planning shares a detailed update about the work of Holy Name’s many directorates. Francis Gunn says, now that the New Year is underway, the HNP 2008 — 2013 Strategic Plan is being implemented through a series of new and ongoing initiatives.

Province Increases Visibility as Churches Commemorate Vocation Week
With Holy Name's popular vocation ad hitting a sentiment with NYC subway riders, the Province's vocation office has extended the ad campaign for another month.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Remembered
During this week of civil rights awareness and historic moments, friar Stephen Lynch offers a reflection on the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose birthday was commemorated on Jan. 19.

JPIC Team Supports One Ethic of Life Message
Holy Name’s justice, peace and integrity of creation directorate is supporting friars and partners-in-ministry by offering ways to provide a consistent ethic of life message. In conjunction with the Franciscan Action Network, a mini-campaign has been developed — available on the FAN Web site -- that runs through Jan. 30.

FMS Celebrates 18 Years in Mission
The Franciscan Mission Service commemorated 18 years in mission at its fourth annual mission and benefit reception in November. The event looked back at the ministry of more than 90 missioners, celebrated the benefactors of the FMS, and raised $5,000.

Allegany Sisters Publish Sesquicentennial History
A book about the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany has been produced, describing the history of the 150-year-old community based in Western New York. The Wonderful Works of God book traces the beginnings of the sisters and includes photos of friars — both past and present.

St. John the Baptist Province is 150 Years Old
As the St. John the Baptist Province in Ohio begins a celebration of its 150th anniversary in 2009, the province will be commemorating by posting stories about the lives and contributions of friars on its Web site each month.
